Isaac Tourism Development Program
Mackay Tourism welcomes the newest employee, Sharee Bauld, as the Isaac Tourism Development Officer. This role delivered in partnership between Mackay Tourism and Isaac Regional Council has received funding from the Local Buying Foundation for a two year project.

Based in Moranbah, Sharee's previous experience in Tourism, Economic Development and Strategy Development will be monumental in developing the Isaac Tourism industry. This project intends to have tourism as a major cornerstone of the regional economy, providing sustainable income and employment in our community and increasing the liveability of the region through expanding local amenities and recreational assets.

The primary role will work to develop and market tourism businesses, destinations, and products specifically within the Isaac region. Although still in its infancy, tourism presents an exciting opportunity for economic growth and diversity for the communities of the Isaac region.

The Local Buying Foundation was excited to be Platinum Partner for the Tourism and Events Forum, held on December 3rd, 2020. Featuring a program of exciting guest speakers including some who had worked closely with the Central Highlands Development Corporation on their new Brand Story.

The launch of the "Central Queensland Highlands" is a way to try and differentiate the Central Highlands region in Central Queensland from the other highlands across Australia.

After significant work was done to develop the brand for the Central Queensland Highlands tourism campaign, guest speakers spoke about the importance of businesses showcasing their story and developing their brand story.

Following the Tourism and Events Forum,  attendees were welcomed to join Darryl Black from Ka Ka Mundi Tours to see some of the tourism hotspots that the Central Highlands region has to offer and how tourism operators can leverage off these unique destinations.

Local Buying Foundation National Update

Melissa Westcott (C-Res Director)
Chair of Local Buying Foundation
Welcome to our latest edition of the LBF ENews!

As we close out 2020, we reminisce on the year that was – whilst it posed many challenges for all including our little team, the Local Buying Foundation achieved many great things.

In response to Covid-19 and the effects that the pandemic had on businesses and business and industry groups, the Local Buying Foundation worked quickly to develop the B.I.G. Futures Fund.

The B.I.G. Futures Fund aimed to support Business, Economic and Industry Groups (B.I.G) that faced significant challenges through Covid-19. The fund enabled these organisations to gain quick access to funding for projects that aligned with Business and Industry Innovation. The B.I.G. Futures Fund successfully supported nine projects across NSW and QLD, providing a total of $171,635 in approved funding.

2020 also saw the launch of the Local Buying Foundation in Western Australia.  The launch of the LBF in WA provides opportunities to enhance the economic stability in the local government areas of the Town of Port Hedland and the Shire of East Pilbara.
Since inception in 2020, the WA LBF has provided a total of $38,500 in funding to three projects.

Early in 2021, we will be launching the Local Buying Foundation in South Australia. The launch of the SA LBF will mean that we now have a Foundation operating alongside each of the Local Buying Programs.

During the last quarter of 2020, October to December, a number of projects were approved in NSW, QLD and WA.

  • Pilbara Artist Development | The Junction Co.
  • Muswellbrook Inspirations Conference | Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce
  • Upper Hunter Showcase | Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce
  • Scone Business Development Project | Scone Chamber of Commerce
  • International Women's Day | Resource Industry Network
  • Events Bootcamp Series | Mackay Tourism
  • Bike Strategy Project | Mackay Tourism
  • Mackay City Think Tank | Mackay Chamber of Commerce
  • Tap into Tenders | Central Highlands Development Corporation
  • Business Excellence Awards | Central Highlands Development Corporation
  • Economic Futures Forum | Central Highlands Development Corporation

The Local Buying Foundation would not be able to approve projects like those above without the continual support from BHP, BMA and BMC using the Local Buying Program and the contribution this provides to the Foundation.

Whilst a number of our approved projects had to be postponed or delivery changed due to the pandemic, the LBF still managed to fund over $1.3 million nationally across QLD, NSW and WA – it is safe to say that things were not slowing down in the world of LBF!
LBF Advisory Committee
The Local Buying Foundation Advisory Committee (LBFAC) welcomes new member, Murray McKirdy. Joining the committee as the BHP Founding Representative, Murray is the Head of Supply Business Partnership for BMA.

The LBFAC looks forward to welcoming Murray to the committee. His previous experience working across a range of industries and regions in Australia will be beneficial to the Local Buying Foundation.

The LBF would like to thank former BHP representative Liz Watts for her valuable time and contribution whilst on the Advisory Committee in 2020.
